Cressey & Company
Cressey & Company (Cressey) with offices in Chicago and Nashville, is a private investment firm focused on the health care industry. The principals of the firm have been active health care investors for nearly three decades and have invested in a wide range of health care businesses. Cressey seeks to invest in high-potential segments of the U.S. health care market and apply its skills and expertise – along with its capital – to enhance the performance and accelerate the growth of its portfolio companies.
Cressey desired a new image as a select group of partners were breaking away from their parent company (Thoma Cressey) and relocating to a new office tower located at 155 North Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL. Cressey saw this relocation and the new design solution as an opportunity to change the way they work as a team and service their health care clientele. In their previous occupancy, all partners, principals and vice presidents occupied office space on the window wall. Communication between and amongst the professional staff was either scheduled formally, by telephone or by e-mail. In the new facility, these offices not only reduced in size by approximately 15%, but are much closer in proximity to each other as many have opted to occupy interior space off the window wall. Full height, clear glass on both the exterior and interior offices allow for all to enjoy natural light infiltration and permit visual access to each other enhancing communication and greater collaboration.
The associates work as a collaborative team in a research and screening intensive process, identifying high potential target areas for investment. To accommodate this workstyle, the planning solution provides for individual “heads down” work in glass-fronted offices distributed around a centralized, open meeting space with wireless connectivity, dry marker surfaces and appropriate furniture for teaming. Confidentiality and privacy is a critical issue for Cressey‘s portfolio companies and investors. The board room, also constructed of full height and clear glass, allows for an opaque “frost” to occur by the flick of a switch, releasing a gas into the chamber created by two pieces of glass. This provides immediate visual privacy. Enhanced audio and visual communications was created in the new boardroom allowing for “real time” communication with investors and portfolio companies around the country and the Cressey’s Nashville office.
The aesthetic solution for the project is a careful balance of a timeless, light filled, open international style with select appointment of warm, contemporary detailed, Sapele and Makore Mahogany paneling and furniture. Direct/indirect lighting solutions were carefully selected in order to meet the stringent, energy conservation codes in Chicago.
