NELSON designs Polaris headquarters

NELSON, a global design, architecture, engineering and consulting services firm, is nearing the completion of its interior design and branding project for the Polaris Bass Creek Headquarters in Plymouth, MN – just in time for the ultimate outdoorsy gift giving season!

As reported earlier this year, Polaris Industries Inc., a world renowned snowmobile, motorcycle, ATV and small-vehicle maker, purchased a 120,000 square foot office space at the Bass Creek Business Center in Plymouth to support its recent and future business growth. The company moved into the new location in December. For the design, Polaris enlisted both Ryan Cos. US Inc. and NELSON.

Deviating from a more traditional design, Polaris wanted their office to be simple yet reflective of the environments where their consumers utilize their vehicles and products. The design proposed by Ryan and NELSON borrowed cues from the outdoor terrains their vehicles navigate. Reclaimed wood, metals and concrete were used and topographical views of the best US and International riding locations were incorporated to accurately capture the Polaris brand and image. Employees, customers and visitors will be able to enjoy and take advantage of the office’s open collaborative areas, showrooms and break areas.

“Our intent was to blend the Polaris ‘Live to Ride’ culture with the workplace environment. We focused on ways to enhance how people engage their product by creating spaces with a familiar industrial look and feel while also supporting the diversity of their ride culture from motorcycles, to off-road vehicles,” said Matt Grynol, Project Designer at NELSON.

Amber Liestman, NELSON Interior Designer stated, “Our team’s main objective was to infuse the space with Polaris’s ‘LIVE TO RIDE’ culture. This was done through thoughtful placement of large in-motion graphics and the display of actual products, enticing guests to ‘kick the tires’.”

Additional members of the project team include Scott Hierlinger, Design Director, Deanne Erpelding, Senior Project Manager, Steve Mueller, Senior Architect and Lynnette Buehring, Job Captain.

The headquarters will bring together over 400 employees in Plymouth. The newly designed space will speak to the Polaris vision while giving employees, clients and customers the feeling that they have just stepped out onto a trail. Photography of the completed headquarters is currently scheduled to be available in early 2015.
