NELSON was asked by MTV Networks, a division of Viacom International, Inc., to renovate their space in midtown Manhattan bringing MTV Networks’ Legal and Financial Groups together and integrating both departments into the MTVN culture.
After an intensive programming study, NELSON recognized drawbacks in the existing floorplan which was neither efficient in terms of density nor conducive to the groups’ work style, which required more privacy than the existing built-in, low-partitioned workstations. MTV decided on a more thorough renovation to achieve higher density, more efficiency, and more private workstations. Working closely with the MTV Networks Planning and Design Department, NELSON created a layout that increased density by 30% and achieved the desired level of privacy.
Projecting MTV’s youthful energy into the space, NELSON created a fun dynamic space by renovating the public and shared spaces, lobbies, reception, pantries, and conference rooms with bright finishes, including corrugated acrylic panels, bright red acrylic accents, patterned glass, and silver resilient floors. The design team addressed wayfinding by differentiating the conference rooms that anchor each corner of the floor, using markedly different lighting, colored acrylic panels, and carpet accents. The balance of the floor was made distinct through the use of decorative lighting, accent paints and carpet patterns, all of which provided easily visible landmarks.
The result is a renovation that reused much of its exiting construction to create a strikingly different work environment that meets the functional requirements of the Legal and Financial Groups and still announces to the staff and visitors that this is MTV Networks.
