Caterpillar Paving Products

Maple Grove, MN
Caterpillar Paving Products
Caterpillar imagined their new marketing facility in Maple Grove to be a world-class showroom for its road construction machinery, a first for their company, with a high-end look similar to their premier distributors’ dealerships. Caterpillar’s customers hail from around the world, including high growth areas in South America and Asia, so they were looking for a place to bring their prospective clients and engage them in their products, brand and culture.
NELSON ground and polished the floors, painted the walls and ceilings, and added high output light fixtures within the 60,000 SF showroom/warehouse. Revamping the 23,000 SF visitor center and marketing offices is when the fun began. In the mezzanine space, the NELSON team removed the ceilings, exposed the joists and reconstructed the mechanical systems.  Creative use of acoustic panels within the joist spaces combines acoustic performance with a clean aesthetic. The formerly under-used space now acts as training rooms, breakout areas and sales offices. Customer-focused conference rooms with a technology-inspired palette of silver, white and charcoal and large lounge-cum-dining room were designed and equipped with Caterpillar’s brand as a consistent design parameter.
The brand is also showcased in the main area of the showroom with larger-than-life displays (10-20 pieces of paving machinery on display at a time) and the iconic Caterpillar yellow is used in multiple applications throughout the facility. The team also incorporated a variety of branding elements, through signage and graphics that highlight Caterpillar Paving Products’ machines in use around the globe.
Careful consideration was given to the design and selection of every inch of the facility, from the exterior entry pylon, to the floating soffits to the dishware and placemats, to ensure that visitors, clients and employees all are immersed in the Caterpillar experience. The design work was completed in five weeks and the construction was finished in an unbelievable three months.
