The world is changing. From the moment we wake until the moment we sleep, technology infuses our lives. Our digital footprint is grown larger by the day, and our physical footprint is shrinking. Personal space is giving way more and more frequently to collaborative, “we-spaces”. Now, even the most traditional professions are flowing with the changing tide.

Hemenway & Barnes, trusted counsel to Boston’s high net worth families, businesses, and nonprofit organizations, asked design firm NELSON’s Interiors Practice to reshape its 45,000 square foot location in the heart of downtown in the image of a custom, and current space. The redesign will combine progressive industry trends with the prestigious New England roots of the dual law and investment firm.

“We look forward to making 75 State Street the new home for Hemenway & Barnes,” said Kurt F. Somerville, Managing Partner, Hemenway & Barnes LLP. “We are pleased to be working with Nelson as they prepare our interior design. Our new office promises to support us with efficient, comfortable and updated space, providing a welcoming headquarters for our clients and personnel.”

The theme of the new office is balance. Balance between the services provided, the separation of public and private space, and the combining of trend with long-standing legacy and client-centric dedication. Most significantly, balance between old and new styles of working. Collaborative, multi-purpose gathering spaces support impromptu meetings in rooms outfitted for professional and litigation but designed to provide a residential feel. Quiet rooms provide privacy for important client calls and meetings.

The completed renovation, slated for a September move-in, will bring the noble past of Hemenway & Barnes into the future, maximizing – and balancing – the best of old and new, tradition and trend.

Based in Boston, Hemenway & Barnes LLP has served for over 150 years as trusted counsel to the region’s high net worth families, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Areas of expertise include fiduciary services, estate and tax planning, litigation, corporate and real estate.
