Dining By Design, Impacting Communities
How can an award winning global design and consulting firm join the fight against AIDS in Chicago? By creating an exhibit that draws upon a Farmer’s Market concept that encouraged guests to socialize and engage for Chicago’s annual Dining by Design event hosted by the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA).
With the theme of communal in mind, NELSON Chicago Teammates, Marty Festenstein, Jason Rosenblatt, Al Fiesel, Theresa Williams, Kristin Cerutti, Nicole Zack, Angelica Paleczny, Lauren Haury, Michael Baranowski, and Jennifer Merchant, designed a sustainable piece that served dual functions. The fruit stands later converted into tables and custom-designed aprons also function as chair accents. Upon entering the display, guests received a bag that displayed DIFFA’s logo and the lining of fruit stands showcased DIFFA Chicago’s mission.
“We enjoyed creating this display. Everything served a purpose and really embodied both the spirit of community and sustainability,” said Marty Festenstein, Principal and Legal Practice Co-chair at NELSON Chicago. “Above all, we felt it was most important to recognize the outstanding efforts of DIFFA and relate our display back to their story.”
The team completed the display after work and on weekends during the weeks leading up to the event. Corporate sponsors from Steelcase, Design Tex and Coalesse who greatly contributed to the cause.
Since its founding in 1987, DIFFA Chicago has awarded more than $2.5 million in grants to fund HIV/AIDS research in Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
